Quienes somos

Bodegas Terras Gauda Following the wine-growing revolution in Galicia that was triggered by the setting-up of the D.O. Rías Baixas designation of origin, José María Fonseca, our current Chairman, began to see the wine world more clearly and from his position on the Board managed and supported the development of wine-growing and oenology courses, as well as a host of partnerships related to the art of wine-amking.

From a private initiative and spurred by the setting-up of Viñedos do Rosal, S.A. and Adegas das Eiras, S.A. the founding partners' original dream of making a firm commitment to O Rosal wines began to be realised. He winery's philosophy was that Albariño, being such a noble variety, could benefit greatly from a union with other native strains to provide it with subtle new qualities and so further enhance the already strong reputation of O Rosal wines.

In 1990 the winery was founded and the produce of local grape-growers was used to make 37,000 bottles of Terras Gauda '90, our first year's production, at the same time as we started to plant our own vineyards, with a clear view towards safeguarding the identity of O Rosal wine.

In 1991, with the winery's commitment to establishing its uniqueness now . in place, we produced the first wine from our Albariño variety: Abadía de San Campio.

Over the years, the original two companies have merged into one, called - logically, given the prestige and recognition achieved by our leading brand - Bodegas Terras Gauda, S.A.

Bodegas Terras Gauda - ViñedosAs part of our ongoing concern for research and experimentation, in 1992 and 1993 we carried out successful trials of a sparkling wine made using the champagnoise method, which, although it never came to be marketed, did point the way towards future developments in this specialised sector.

Another experiment, having selected several different clones of Albariño that we found, was to reserve a plot to study its vegetative behaviour, with a view to the subsequent micro-vinification of the fruit from each of them.

Since 1996, with a break in 1998 because of the special difficulties experienced that year, in an attempt to recover the tradition of Galicia's generous wines, we have been making small quantities of TOSTADO Terras Gauda.

We have an experimental plantation for red wines using noble Galician varieties, several other Spanish varieties and a few others from abroad, researching the possibilities of a multi-variety red wine.
