Creativity in wine © [κAκ] graphic-design magazine

Not for its prestige, but simple for pleasure, you can try a glass of Terras Gauda wine and then put your creativity through its paces by designing a poster for this Spanish winery.

This is the fifth consecutive year that Bodegas Terras Gauda have organised an international competition for designers to come up with a poster for their famous product. The winning entry will be used as the basis for the firm´s advertising campaign next year.

Both individual and group entries will be accepted. The maximum number of entries submitted by each entrant is two. The originals of the designs, which must not have been published previously, are to be sent to the offices of Bodegas Terras Gauda. Entries must take the form of a digital version on CD and another mounted on board, no larger than A-0 size (118x84 cm).

The technique and topic is left open. (Painted entries need not be accompanied by computer files). However, entries that reflect the firm´s products – Terras Gauda and Abadía de San Campio wines – will be particularly valued during voting. However, the main criterion for assessment is creativity and craftsmanship when it comes to using the company´s logo in the poster design (the logo is available for entrants in various formats).

To submit entries:
Entries are to be submitted in envelopes bearing the entrant´s name.
Each entry must be accompanied by the following information: entrant´s full name, photocopy of ID card or passport, address and telephone number, any other contact details (e-mail, etc.) and signed acceptance of the terms and conditions of the competition.

Entries to be sent to:
Bodegas Terras Gauda, S. A. Carretera de Tui - A Guarda, km. 46, O Rosal - 36760 Pontevedra, Spain.

First prize: 6,000 euros and the use of the winning entry in next year´s advertising campaign by the winery. Two runners-up: 1,500 euros each.

Deadline for entries: 30 September 2006.

TERRAS GAUDA

From the USA to China

Terras Gauda and Abadía de San Campio labels, both from Bodegas Terras Gauda, recently received important recognition from the NBC critic Edward Deitch. In a report on the white wines from the Rías Baixas Denomination of Origin wine, Deitch pointed out Terras Gauda´s excellent price/quality relation. This American critic´s mention comes at a time that is especially favourable for the O Rosal Bodega´s interest in the US, a country where its marketing has increased by 300 percent with respect to the past financial year. During this year, Terras Gauda is strongly committed to its plan to expand its markets. Southeast Asia (above all Japan and China) appear to be the main target of this winery, although they hope to continue their marketing expansion in Easters Europe, especially in Poland and the Baltic Republics.

"Our main objective is to introduce Galician albariños to Southeast Asia "

José María Fonseca (Chairman of TERRAS GAUDA Wineries)

The Rías Baixas designation of origin is vying with other Spanish regions such as Rioja and Ribera del Duero for a niche in the international wine market. Established in 1989 by José María Fonseca, a Galician entrepreneur and wine enthusiast, TERRAS GAUDA Wineries' ambition is to introduce their albariños to Southeast Asia. The company has established a firm foothold in the United States, where its sales trebled last year.

How did the idea come about to set up the wineries 17 years ago ?
I was working as a technician with the Ministry of Labour. In fact, I'm a civil servant on unpaid leave. I had very close ties with the wine sectr, since I was involved with professional trainings and organising viniculture and oenology courses. I've always had a keen interest in this sector. Then the opportunity arose, and thanks to the support of family, a number of friends, the Xantares restaurant chain, and Sodiga, the Galician Regional Government Investment company, I set up the wineries. Nowadays most of the shares are in the hands of my family, although Caixa Galicia also has a 5% participation in the capital.

What is the position of TERRAS GAUDA wineries in the albariño market?
We are the largest privately-run wineries. We have achieved and output of 1.3 million bottles per annum. In addition, we have been included in the Bierzo designation of origin. We hold 65% of a company in that region, Pittacum Wineries.

What percentage of your sales derives from exports?
We export a little over 20% of what we produce. That's where the competition lies. We have a notable presence in Norway, we have trebled sales to the Unites States and over the past year we have strengthened our position in countries such as Great Britain, Switzerland, Belgium and Mexico, and we have made inroads into others such as Brazil and Canada.

What are your next objectives?
Our main challenge is to break into Eastern Europe, and in particular, reach agreements with local distributors to sell to Southeast Asia. We are dealing with very challenging but highly desirable markets. At the moment we are selling to Japan via two importers, but we have still not reached figures on a large scale. We wish to rise to the challenge posed by those countries, and introduce them to our wines via a presence at a wide range of events.....

The unique white wines of Spain's Galicia

From the little-known albariño grape, these wines are elegant and complex

Dollar for dollar, some of the world’s most compelling white wines can be found in the remote corner of Spain known as Galicia, especially the area just nort Portugal called Rías Baixas on the Atlantic coast. I’ve written about this region before, most recently in the context of light and refreshing summer whites from the Vinho Verde country just across the River Miño in Portugal.

But one can also find wines of elegance and depth that deserve to be better known and that can take their rightful place among other, more celebrated white wines. The most important grape here is albariño, which can be wonderfully aromatic and expressive and is the foundation of the 2004 Terras Gauda Rías Baixas from Bodegas Terras Gauda, a leading producer in the O Rosal sub-region in the southern corner of Rías Baixas.

This was easily the most refined and interesting of several albariños: I tried not long ago and, with a suggested price of $19, is also a good value. A second Terras Gauda wine, the 2004 Abadía de San Campio, is also worth consideration at $15 and is available nationally, whereas the O Rosal bottling has more limited distribution.

The wines from this area, just a stone’s throw from the Atlantic, benefit from the ocean’s moderating influence and are marked by a slightly less acidic style than is often the case with albariño. So, why they are lively and crisp on one hand, they also have a fruit-driven richness that is especially evident in the O Rosal. The wine’s many components include notes of apple, strawberry, mango, minerals and a lemony, somewhat creamy finish. The wine is about 70 percent albariño with the rest from two other local varieties, loureiro and caiño blanco.

All of which make it considerably more than a basis little fish wine, although fish, from broiled flounder or sole fillets to the richness of lobster and scallops, are its natural pairings. It will also go well with simple chicken, pork and veal dishes.

The Abadía, which is 100 percent albariño, is a bit more austere with notes of lemon and lime, orange peel and herbs. A bit enclosed at first, it had opened up nicely when I tasted it again the second night. It, too, has a long, slightly creamy finish.

The whites of Rías Baixas are fresh, lively and complex. They offer the chance to taste unique, small-production wines at still quite reasonable prices.
