Over 600 graphic designers, art studios and universities in Murcia have been invited to take part in the eighth Edition of the Francisco Mantecón International Poster Design Competition organised by Bodegas Terras Gauda. The company has reached out to over 65,000 designers, leading national and international organisations and art schools in over 180 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas and Oceania.

The Francisco Mantecón award is seeking maximum coverage for the event by sending information to over 10,400 media outlets all over the world.

Professionals of the stature of Javier Mariscal, Alberto Corazón, Óscar Mariné, Manuel Estrada and Isidro Ferrer have been members of the jury in previous editions of the competition. Terras Gauda offers a showcase for the latest trends in graphic design see news

REPORT
Soledad Antón

The Francisco Mantecón competition is back. For the eighth consecutive year, Terras Gauda is offering a showcase for the latest trends in graphic design, in the form of its poster competition. The winery has been delighted to see the response growing every year, with the competition´s prestige growing both in Spain and abroad.

In all, 65,000 graphic designers from 180 countries have been invited to take part. Over 6,500 entries were received in previous editions of the event. Some entries were received from faraway places (Japan, United States, Singapore, Latvia and Australia), while others were from closer to home. But they have all tended to share one common denominator: quality and creativity. The jury is often spoiled for choice when it comes to selecting the best entries from such a strong showing.

The jury, chaired by José María Fonseca, found the task so hard that they ended up awarding two runners-up prizes. Given the avalanche of creativity received each year, after the last edition the organisers agreed to put on an exhibition of the 35 finalists. If the receipt of entries continues to increase exponentially, the exhibition will surely have to be extended. Only time will tell.

One early idea to promote the competition that paid off (it´s certainly well enough known today) was to bring in patrons of the stature of Javier Mariscal, Óscar Mariné and Manuel Estrada as leading designers to sit on the jury in previous editions. This year's star designer is Pep Carrió, whose trophy room is packed with awards. For example, the publishers Alfaguara use his images to illustrate their Collection of Mario Vargas Llosa´s works. He has also worked for the Ministry of Culture, the Bank of Spain and the Thyssen Collection.

Besides Fonseca and Pilar Barreiro, Francisco Mantecón´s widow, the only other fixed place on the jury corresponds to the previous year´s winner. This year the visitor to the Rosaleira winery (where the walls are lined with posters) will be the New York designer Taber Calderón, the most recent winner to receive the cheque for 10.000 euros. Although, to be accurate, he was really the first, because until 2008 the first prize was 6,000 euros.

The deadline for entries is 30 September. For any queries about the competition, visit the winery´s website. Good luck!

Terras Gauda invites 65,000 designers to take part in its Mantecón competition see news

The winery has invited graphic designers from 180 countries to participate in the competition and create the firm´s next advertising poster

ANA SAÁ . Vigo
Over 65,000 graphic designers from 180 different countries have been invited to take part in the eighth Edition of the Francisco Mantecón International Poster Design Competition, with a first prize of 10,000 euros, which aims to find a new image to promote the Baixo Miño-based winery Terras Gauda. «The power and plasticity of a poster image is unique,» José María Fonseca, Terras Gauda´s chairman, said yesterday at the presentation of the event.

Art and design studios and schools and fine-arts faculties from all five continents have been invited to participate in this year´s edition of the competition. Fonseca pointed out that the last three winners were from international design studios.

«An image is worth a thousand words, and the poster we are looping for must be both attractive and linked to our products», José María Moretón said.

Terras Gauda´s managing director, Enrique Costas, explained what qualities the winning poster should have. «Freshness and a diversity of styles are very important,» he said.

The deadline for submitting entries is 30 September. The winner will receive a cash prize of 10,000 euros, with 2,000 euros for each of the two runners-up. One of the members of the jury will be Pilar Barreiro, Francisco Mantecón´s widow.

Pittacum Barrica 2006 recognised by 250 expert wine-tasters from all over the World at Europe's major wine event

REPORT
M.Torres

O ROSAL | After 19 years and with over 150 awards under its belt, the Terras Gauda winery is set to match its success in the vineyard with its performance in competitions.

"Pittacum Barrica 2006" has now won the Gold Medal at the International Competition in Brussels. The event was created by Louis Haraux in 1994 and is now one of the world´s most important wine events.

250 expert wine-tasters from all over the world recognised the quality of the Mencía-based wine that Terras Gauda make in El Bierzo. Pittacum was up against 6,289 wines and spirits from 54 different countries, with this award confirming its undeniable organoleptic qualities. At the three-day event, over 24,000 bottles were opened, over 6,000 wine-tastings were held and over 4,500 litres of wine were drunk.

Last year Pittacum Barrica won a highly prized silver medal at the same event now won by this Mencía-based wine, which, oddly enough, is made separately, as the winery´s technical director, Emilio Rodríguez, explained yesterday. Terras Gauda sells about 150,000 bottles of Pittacum Barrica every year (compared with only 7,000 bottles of Aurea). «It´s a Mencía wine that comes from a number of vineyards all over the Bierzo area, with different characteristics, so it´s made separately to make the most of its characteristics,» Emilio Rodríguez said.

Pittacum Barrica won a double by adding another medal to its Collection, in this case the silver at the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition, held in New York.

But the list of awards does not end there, because Abadía San Campio, which has already has over 120 awards and distinctions obtained at the world´s leading wine events since it was first launched in 2001, has also brought a silver medal back from New York.

ELast year this Albariño wine was named "Wine of the Year", and ranked twelfth on a select list of the best wines in the World, winning the gold in Brussels for Terras Gauda.

Exports

The Rosaleira-based winery´s sales continue to grow apace. Despite the general fall in wine consumption in recent years, major wineries are not only holding their own but also expanding their sales all over the world. This clearly suggests that the credit crunch can be beaten with quality.

The winery, which sells its wines Terras Gauda, Terras Gauda Etiqueta Negra and Abadía de San Campio on 36 international markets, increased its export sales by 33% last year. New markets were captured in Asia (Hong Kong, the Philippines, Vietnam and Laos) and Europe, and the firm´s position in the United States was strengthened thanks to a new alliance with Codorniu. Meanwhile, Pittacum, which joined the group in 2002, is present in 24 markets and increased its exports by 80% in 2008.

Its quality is confirmed by both the number of awards it has won and its sales figures: the best award of all for a flagship product, which is never submitted for competitions.

The winery holds 9.85% of its own capital, which could provide an opening for a strategic partner to provide some financial muscle to allow the firm to buy a Rioja D.O. winery. «Now´s a good time,» he said.

The winery is alert to new D.O. opportunities that may arise, particularly Rioja
