Cheers! - 6th Francisco Mantecón International Poster Design Competition
Wine, advertising posters, Francisco Mantecón: these are the key words for the competition being organised for the sixth successive year by the Spanish winery Terras Gauda. Why these key words? Wine, because that is clearly what is being promoted; advertising posters, because that is clearly what the organisers want to receive; and Francisco Mantecón, because that is the name of the competition. It was the name of the artist "who was the exclusive designer of the winery´s corporate image – a friend, an efficient worker and partner in the company since its beginnings". The creation of marvellous works of art is the goal of the competition.
The deadline for submitting entries is 30 September 2007. The conditions for entries can be consulted at the company´s website: www.franciscomantecon.com.

The Spanish winery Terras Gauda continues its international growth by penetrating nine markets in the Americas, Asia and Europe
In 2006 the winery reported a turnover of €7.6 million, increasing its sales in Spain and abroad by 18%. The firm´s core international markets are the United States, Mexico, Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom
Bodegas Terras Gauda reported a turnover of €7.6 million last year, €600,000 more than the previous year. After-tax profits grew by 5.51% compared with 2005, reaching €900,000. These financial results have coincided with the firm´s national and international expansion. In 2006, the O Rosal-based winery conquered another nine international markets (Sweden, Finland, Taiwan, Korea, Macao, Canada, Argentina, Colombia and Panama), and is now present on 30 markets abroad.
The company also reached into new global distribution agreements for Japan and Ireland and saw a sharp rise in sales in Puerto Rico (200%), the Netherlands (153%), Germany (48%) and the United Kingdom (42%). The winery, which markets the wines Terras Gauda, Terras Gauda Etiqueta Negra and Abadía de San Campio, also consolidated its position on its core foreign markets: the United States, Mexico, Norway, Switzerland and the UK.
In Spain, where sales account for 30% of the total, the year-on-year growth was 18%, reaching 25% in certain key markets: Madrid, Catalonia and Asturias.
Last year Terras Gauda also made considerable progress in its research projects. The winery currently has three RDI projects underway: Albariño-grape clone selection, in partnership with the Spanish Scientific Research Council and from which promising results have already been obtained; selection and isolation of ecotypical yeasts; and a new mashing project.
The O Rosal-based winery also achieved international recognition for its wines in 2006. Terras Gauda was awarded the highest score for a Spanish white wine by the prestigious journal Wine Spectator, and was also chosen as one of the ten best wines – and the only Spanish wine selected – by NBC, the US television channel.

Bodegas Pittacum (Bierzo D.O.), which was acquired by Bodegas Terras Gauda in 2002, also continued to report positive results. In 2006 its sales increased by 175%, while exports also grew significantly, now accounting for 25% of total sales. The winery has successfully launched its products in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Canada, Finland, Taiwan, the Netherlands and Switzerland, while new global distribution agreements have been reached for the German and U.S. markets, bringing the number of international markets where the firm is present up to 20.
PITTACUM BARRICA and PITTACUM AUREA have been sold by leading stores in Switzerland, Mexico and Germany since 2006, and Pittacum Barrica was chosen as the best wine from El Bierzo by the Belgian Vino Magazine.

Bodegas Terras Gauda O Rodal, Rías Baixas, Spain ($26,91 points, www.tewinecaches.com)
Gorgeous aromatic, fleshy, lively and spicy white made on Spain´s northwest coast in Galicia, primarily from the local albarino grape (70%) with 20% loureira and 10% caino. Youth is so important with this style of wine that can sink into soupiness as it ages. This is as bright as they come, bursting with star anise, pineapple and grapefruit.

Pick of the bunch
The O Rosal is less full-bodied than the other three wines, but I enjoyed it so much at a tasting earlier this week that I wanted to fit it in. The wine is made partly from Albariño, but also the less familiar Loureira and Caiño Branco, a variety I had not come across before.

To match a wine to your menu you've got to look at what´s setting the tone. Here, the quite delicate flavours of globe artichoke are deliciously dressed with little more than herbs, fruit and goat's cheese. So try to find an elegant and subtle white wine - certainly with some firm acidity, but not too overwhelming. Look no further than pretty much any albariño such as the Abadia San Campio (see wines of the week on page 24). Or try its stablemate, O Rosal Terras Gauda Rías Baixas 2006 (€19-21) at Deveneys, Dundrum; Cllars Wine Warehouse, Naas Road or o'Driscoll's, Ballinlough, Cork.

CLASSIC DRINKS, one of the more recently-established wine importing and distributing firms in Ireland, brought part of their portfolio on the road recently, touching down for tastings in various centres around the country.
It was a great oportunity for restaurateurs and retailers to catch up woth the developing range – see today´s wines of the week on the right. And here´s a little more background to some of their other wines.
(2) Abadía San Campio Albariño Rías Baixas 2006 (€15-17). When mere bite isn't enough, it's time to move on to coastal Galicia's fabulous Albariño style. This one's fresh and bright with peach and tangerine zest complemented by lovely middleweight complexity.
(4) Pittacum Barrica Bierzo 2004 (€16-17). This is what happens when the people behind the albariño above work further inland in Bierzo with the underrated mencía grape: it's a beatifully-perfumed savoury red with a sybte tart tang to it. One of my favourite wines

LA MIRILLA (THE SPYHOLE)
Number 12 on the Top 100 list
Terras Gauda has good reason to celebrate. One of the O Rosal–based winery´s flagship wines, Abadía de San Campio 2005, has been awarded a Wine of the Year prize by the World Association of Wine and Spirit Writers and Journalists.
Every year the Association ranks the top 100 wines from all over the world. And Terras Gauda´s albariño-based product has been ranked 12th place this year. José María Fonseca and his team must be very happy with this result, since they have been competing with the best wines from such countries as France, Italy, Australia and Argentina. Abadía de San Campio 2005 – the only product that the winery enters for competitions – has won four gold medals (Bordeaux, Brazil, Argentina and Panama), as well as other awards in the Slovak Republic, the United Kingdom, Spain and Mexico.
